-          Piranha T.

On Mr. Bean’s farm there are chickens, cows, and more. But one animal, a pig, decides to be a detective. That is Freddy, and there is a mystery for him to solve. The cat, Jinx, tells Freddy about it. One of Mr. Bean’s children, Everett, has a toy train car that has gone missing! When Freddy discovers the furry thieves – rats! – he goes after them. But they use the train car for protection!

Freddy solves many cases, makes a jail, and even helps the police. And Freddy has also to prove Jinx is innocent against the rats!

I like Freddy the Detective for many reasons. I like it because it is about a pig (which is my favorite animal), and because it is a mystery. I also love the characters, Jinx and Freddy and the others. I recommend Freddy the Detective to readers.

Lord and Lady Bunny: Almost Royalty - by Mrs. Bunny and Translated from the Rabbit by Peggy Horvath (2014)

Lord and Lady Bunny: Almost Royalty is a hilarious book about when Mrs. Bunny decides she wants to be Queen. So they set off “across the pond” (which is what all distinguished bunnies call the sea), to England. At the same time, Madeline and her ex-hippie parents set off to England to work in a sweets shop they have just inherited. They meet on the cruise ship as they are all going to England.

I like this book because it is very funny! The characters are also really good.

Note from Mamma: this is a sequel to Mr. and Mrs. Bunny, Detectives Extraordinaire, which was also (according to Super Kitty) equally funny – though you can enjoy this book without having read the first. Our whole family loved this very clever story read on audiobook by the, um, translator!

Once, Hazel and Jack were best friends. But then suddenly, Jack stopped talking to Hazel—and then he disappeared altogether. It is up to Hazel to find him in the dark woods, which are brimming with magic.

I like this book because it is about a normal 11-year-old girl who suddenly is surrounded by magic. I also like how it is centered on Jack and Hazel’s friendship. It is a good fantasy book.

Reviews by Piranha T. & Super Kitty

From Piranha T.:

The Power of Poppy Pendle is about a girl named Poppy who discovers - by accident - she is magic. Her parents want her to be a witch, while she wants to be a baker. So when they sign her up for Ruthsfield Acadamy, a school for witches, she is tortured. When she is seven, it is time for her to start at the academy, and when she starts, she is tortured even more. This book is very good, and I don't quite know what my favorite part is. I love it all - the beginning, the middle, and the end. In other words, I like the whole book. Poppy is a great character, but with her magic, her parents don't listen to how much she wants to be a baker. I recommend The Power of Poppy Pendle to readers.

From Super Kitty:

Most children aren't born with magic. So Poppy's parents are thrilled when Poppy is, and won't listen when she tries to tell them she can't stand it! For Poppy has a passion for baking, not magic. Poppy tries and tries to tell them this until one night she runs out of patience and runs away to the nearby bakery. Will her parents find her?

I like this book because it is fun to read and it is written really well. I also like how Poppy likes baking.

Book Reviews By & For Kids

Everyone knows that Rapunzel spent her early years locked up in a tower. We’d like to think she read plenty of books to while away the time, and that she’d appreciate our own favorites.

Founded in 2014, our reviews focus on great books for middle grade (MG) readers. Beginning in 2018, we began adding selected Young Adult (YA) books as well, but only if we really love them and think Rapunzel Reads followers will too. Favorite picture books have their own page.

Looking for more YA recommendations? Until 2022, we had a separate For Older Readers page, where we highlighted over two dozen awesome YA books. Check it out here!
